Weird News Yet Again

The news just keeps getting weirder…

What does one look for in a mate?
TORONTO (Reuters) - When it comes to romance, women prefer someone who tickles their funny bone while men opt for those who catch their eye, according to an international survey released on Wednesday.
The survey, conducted in 16 countries by Canadian romance publisher Harlequin Enterprises, asked men and women on six continents about traits they liked or disliked and how they went about trying to meet Mr. or Ms. Right.
The poll revealed differences between countries in the way people tried to impress the opposite sex.
Australians and British men frequently admitted drinking too much, while about half of German and Italian men said they had lied about their finances. Spaniards were the most likely to use sex to catch someone's attention.
Eighty percent of Brazilian and Mexican men said they had lied about their marital or relationship status, as did 70 percent of German women, the survey said.
When it came to meeting that special someone, a majority of respondents preferred to rely on friends for introductions. The Internet was not a popular hunting ground except in Portugal, where about half the surveyed men and women opted to find people online.
Both Spain and France suffered a gender gap. Thirty percent of Spanish men, but no Spanish women, looked for love online. In France, 40 percent of men but only 10 percent of women attended parties, bars and clubs to meet someone, but they did have one thing in common: both sexes rated looks as more important than their counterparts in other countries.
When it came to that first meeting, a majority of men polled said beauty was more important than brains, while women put a sense of humor at the top of their list.
Physical attraction was the top priority for men in France, Brazil, Greece, Japan and Britain. And while 40 percent of Portuguese men rated intelligence over looks in a first encounter, no Australian men did so.
In the United States and Canada, humor was considered the most important trait by both men and women, getting 63 and 73 percent of the vote respectively.

I guess the spell doesn’t work forever…

TOKYO (Reuters) - Police found a stun gun and tear gas Friday at the Tokyo home of a man who said he persuaded 11 younger women to live with him by chanting a spell, media reports said.
Police suspect he used the weapons to prevent the women, mainly in their 20s, from leaving, the reports said.
Hirohito Shibuya, 57, was arrested Thursday for allegedly threatening a 20-year-old woman who was reluctant to join the commune by telling her that if she left she would be turned to mincemeat, they said.
He denied threatening the woman, Kyodo news agency said, adding that he also allegedly told her he was a former senior officer in Japan's military with secret agents around him.
Shibuya, a bald, rotund man with bags under his eyes, has attracted heavy media attention this week after claiming he chanted a spell to attract the women.
He had married and divorced several of the women, who continued to live with him, the reports said.
Asked what the incantation was, he told a newspaper: "When you say it, even unattractive men become attractive. But I won't say it because if I do, I'll die."
Police confiscated several books on hypnosis from his home, Kyodo said
Remembering traditions does not mean living them everyday…

HARARE (Reuters) - Zimbabwean twins who became media celebrities for appearing in public wearing nothing but traditional African goatskin loincloths have been detained pending trial for indecent exposure.
Harare magistrate Mishrod Guvamombe also ordered the 22-year-old brothers, dubbed the "Terrible Twins" by local newspapers, to undergo psychiatric evaluation, the official Herald newspaper said Friday.
The men, Tafadzwanashe and Tapiwanashe Fichani, raised eyebrows last month when they went to an upscale Harare shopping mall clad only in brief loincloths -- leading several shocked shoppers to call the police.
The twins said they were making a statement by appearing in traditional African clothing dating back to pre-colonial times.
State prosecutors disagreed and lodged a case of indecent exposure against them, a position the Herald said was backed by the head of Zimbabwe's National Traditional Healers' Association.
"We have failed to see how their actions conform to our culture," association president Gordon Chavunduka told the newspaper. "Dressing of that nature is now reserved for special traditional and cultural occasions, not everywhere."
The twins were denied bail and ordered back to court for trial on February 2.

More News of the Weird

Well, there you have it, never try to place a curse on a supreme being….

NAIROBI (Reuters) - A starving Kenyan woman placed a powerful tribal curse on God, accusing him of sending famine, and died in her sleep, local newspapers said Thursday.
The woman from eastern Kenya's drought-ravaged Kangundo district decided to invoke a dreaded oath from the Kamba community, famed for its potent witchcraft, media reports said.
"Whoever brought this famine, let him perish," the woman chanted, striking a cooking pot with a stick.
"She accomplished the feat at 10 a.m. and waited for the results, but God's wrath struck at night. She died peacefully in her sleep," the Kenya Times newspaper said.
Poor rains for three years running have left more than 3.5 million Kenyans on the edge of starvation, prompting President Mwai Kibaki to declare the drought a national disaster.

News of the Weird

Hmmm…. Well, there goes that cure for hiccups…
BOGOTA, Colombia (Reuters) - A Colombian man accidentally shot his nephew to death while trying to cure his hiccups by pointing a revolver at him to scare him, police in the Caribbean port city of Barranquilla said on Tuesday.
After shooting 21-year-old university student David Galvan in the neck, his uncle, Rafael Vargas, 35, was so distraught he turned the gun on himself and committed suicide, police said.
The incident took place on Sunday night while the two were having drinks with neighbors.
Galvan started to hiccup and Vargas, who works as a security guard, said he would use the home remedy for hiccups of scaring him. He pulled out his gun, pointed it at Galvan and it accidentally went off, witnesses told local television.
“They were drinking but they were aware of what was going on,” one witness said

And who says dreams don’t come true, sometimes they just need a little force behind them…
TOKYO (Reuters) - A middle-aged Tokyo man found to be living with 10 younger women said he attracted them by reciting an incantation that came to him in a dream.
The 57-year-old man’s unusual living arrangements came to light when another woman complained to police that he had threatened her after she refused to join his harem, Kyodo news agency said Wednesday.
“I had a dream that told me I would become attractive to women if I recited a particular incantation,” it quoted the man as saying.
A rapid series of weddings and divorces left the man with a large group of ex-wives, mostly in their 20s and 30s, who shared his surname and continued to live with him.

Uhm…YUCK!!!
MELBOURNE (Reuters) - An Australian couple could reap a fragrant fortune after what they thought was an odd-looking tree stump turned out to be a rare lump of ambergris, a whale excretion used in perfumes and known as “floating gold.”
Loralee and Leon Wright were walking along a remote beach near Streaky Bay in western South Australia state on a fishing trip three weeks ago when they saw the strange object.
Intrigued, they took a closer look and Leon Wright, thinking it could have been some kind of cyst from a large marine animal, suggested they take the 32 pound lump home.
“She said ‘You’re not putting that thing in my car’,” the Australian Broadcasting Corp. quoted marine ecologist Ken Jury as saying on its Web site (www.abc.net.au) Wednesday.
Curiosity eventually got the better of the Wrights. Unable to find an answer on the Internet, they went back and got it two weeks later and described it to Jury.
“It immediately struck me as being ambergris—it couldn’t be anything else,” Jury said.
“It’s actually belched out by the animal, would you believe, and those few across the world that have witnessed that or heard it say it’s quite remarkable ... apparently the sound of it travels for miles across the water,” he said.
Jury, who is acting for the family, said ambergris can fetch between $20-$65 a gram, The Age newspaper reported on Wednesday. That would make the Wrights’ find worth at least
$295,000.
Used in perfumes by ancient Egyptians and mythologized in literary classics like Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick,” ambergris is spewed out of the intestines of sperm whales.
Scientists theorize it is produced to aid in the removal of hard, sharp objects like squid beaks that whales may eat.
The waxy, foul-smelling substance is lighter than water and can float for years, during which time it is cleansed by the sun and salt water and becomes hard, dark and waxy and develops a rich musky smell prized by perfumers around the world.
“The Egyptians used it. Certainly the Chinese did and they not only used it in perfumes, but they used to eat it and they used to give it as gifts,” Jury said.

Ethics of War and Peace

We started off my Ethics of War and Peace class with a bang.  We started a discussion on whether Hitler’s generals were war criminals or prisoners of war.  Oh boy.  That opened a can of worms, to say the least.  We had to define the difference and then look at each case individually.  Some people said no matter what they were all war criminals, some people said no matter what they were all prisoners of war, and some looked at the cases individually and disagreed with everyone else.  We also looked back at Thucydides presentation of the Athenian generals confronting the city council of the island city-state of Melios.

Ode to Peaches

Ode to Peaches

Here's to Peaches,
A fuzzy little cat,
Who is Heaven now
Due to some prat.

A cuddly little

Kitten was he,
Never carrying
Animosity.

On Earth, he was
Greatly loved,
Fit into his home
Like a hand to a glove.

In Heaven
May the same be true
As he finds
His home anew

Here's to the begining of a new semester

My classes start tomorrow. I have a teacher I haven't had before and one I have had before. I kinda know what to expect from one, the class is The Ethics of War and Peace, and the other Ihave no idea what she will require, that class is Physical Geology. I really don't like not knowing what to expect, but it isn't going to stop me from going to school for my degree, I guess I will jsut get really nervous before class and then go into it.
My gym buddy circle looks like it is going to go from two people to four people, should be fun. We are all women, so we can encourage each other without any weirdness. :)
Oh well, I guess it is about bed time for me.

Home

I am finally home!! I love my family, love spending time with them, but there is something about being home that can not be beat. Maybe it is the fact that I can sleep in my own bed. Although I did come home to a refirigerator that had completely broke while I was gone and my AC unit is almost dead, but better I came home now than spend another month with my family and then come home to find it out....

Rambling Thoughts

I sometimes wonder what my dog, Hagrid, is thinking. Especially when he looks at me like I should know what he is thinking. I hope to one day interpret all of the signals and know what it is he is thinking. But then I will prolly get stuck behind the gender line. I won't know what he is thinking because I am not a he, I am a she. Oh well.

Ever wonder what it would be like to be a bird? being able to fly and swoop and divebomb. My bad luck, I would end up airsick.

I saw a painting the other day that I wish I had been in at the moment in time that it was painted. It was a lovely sunset on a beach with the mountains behind it. What was the artist thinking when he painted that picture. Probably had nothing to do with chickens, I bet.

Curiosity drives me nuts sometimes. Why wonder all these things if I will never be able to know the answers to these questions.

Yule Time and a Happy New Year!

Ahhh...it's finally over and we can all now relax. I went to New York to visit family, it was the first time in almost 25 years that all my mother's siblings were together at Yule. It was nice. I got to build a snowman and have a snowball fight, and then I called Myjic and rubbed it in that I got to play in the snow. Then a few days later, she called me, as my family and I were driving through a blizzard, and bragged that she was walking on the beach without her shoes in 80 degree weather. By that time, I think I was entirely sick of snow and being cold that I told her to hush. :) Luv ya' Myjic! I had a good time before I went to New York as well. Myjic, Cowboy, Forestcrow, and I gathered over at Myjic's house for our annual Birthday/Yule party. It was nice being back with my sisters, even if I did get a terrible head cold that night that lasted for a week. :) Then New Year's Eve was a blast as well. Again, it was at Myjic's house with the addition of Jade and Vlad, add acohol and explosives to that mix and it was quite an evening! :D I put a mortor firework type deal in thechamber upside down by accident and got the daylights scared out of me when the chamber exploded at the bottom. Did you all know that the Predator brand artillery fireworks give you really good chambers made out of more than just cardboard. They reenforce those chambers with fiberglass. I was told I wasn't allowed to touch the Predators after that. I can't figure out why....
